World of Warcraft: Forever – New Way to Experience Azeroth Announced at BlizzCon

During the latest BlizzCon 2026 that took place over the last weekend, developer Blizzard Entertainment had been on a roll, annoucing new projects and updates right and left. StarCraft, Diablo, Heroes of the Storm, Hearthstone and, of course, World of Warcraft – everyone got something to be excited about in the near future.

Among the most interesting and unexpected was the reveal of World of Warcraft: Forever, a brand-new way to experience Azeroth. WoW: Forever begins where the original Vanilla WoW begins: in the early “Year 1” period of Azeroth, before Kazzak reopened the Dark Portal and before later journeys to places like Northrend reshaped the timeline. Rather than rushing forward, the team is building from the original level 1–60 world, expanding events, characters, and locations that exist—or could have existed—within that foundational era.

The team calls this approach “found photographs”, discovering story threads that feel as though they might have been part of Classic Azeroth all along – but weren’t, making them brand-new both for veteran and newcomer players alike. The philosophy favors local mysteries, grounded conflicts, and underused characters—the kinds of stories that make the world feel large, textured, and full of possibilities just beyond the road.

World of Warcraft: Forever occupies its own “time bubble” which allows the team explore those possibilities without disrupting the original Azeroth’s foundational stories.

What makes World of Warcraft: Forever Unique:

  • New old world zones, including Riverglades and Mount Hyjal;
  • New class x race combos, including Forsaken Paladins;
  • Brand-new zone: Zephras Isles and the Skyborne, also known as the shen’dorei or hidden people. Their history begins with rebels who fled Eldre’Thalas after the War of the Ancients and eventually found refuge in Skywall, where wind spirits anchored their island home in the elemental plane.
  • The experience will be kept at level 60 indefinitely.
