MTG's Most Expensive Card Is Making A Comeback In Reality Fracture

The most expensive Magic: The Gathering card of all time is making an unexpected return to the game in the Reality Fracture set, in a new form that will let players create a field of incredibly powerful flowers.

The Black Lotus card from Magic: The Gathering's Alpha set is easily the game's most valuable card, outside one-of-a-kind releases, like The One Ring written in Sindarin. A high-quality Black Lotus can easily sell for millions at auction and will never be reprinted, thanks to being on the Reserved List, which was created by Wizards of the Coast as a way of saying these cards won't return and will retain their original value.

The Black Lotus Returns to Magic: The Gathering as a Token In Reality Fracture

One way in which Wizards of the Coast bypasses the Reserved List is by bringing back the effects of old cards and tying them to new ones, as it did with Ancestral Recall in the Secrets of Strixhaven set. The next banned card to receive this treatment is Black Lotus, which was so powerful due to it being an artifact that cost no mana to summon, and could be spent to receive three mana of any color, making it incredibly useful in every single deck.

CBR learned in a preview for the upcoming Reality Fracture set that the Black Lotus is returning as Lotus tokens, which have the exact same effect as the original Alpha card. The artwork even features a Black Lotus flower, though with a human face at its center, suggesting it was sacrificed to create the token.

Players Will Have to Work For Their Lotus Tokens

The power of the Black Lotus isn't something that Wizards of the Coast would return to lightly, and those who want to use it in Reality Fracture will have to use specific decks. The only card currently confirmed to spawn Lotus tokens is Kwia Vigorbloom, the Sphinx that leads the Vigorbloom house of Hexhaven, which is an alternate universe version of the Strixhaven school.

Kwia Vigorbloom costs six mana to summon and can create on Lotus token per turn if the player gains life, meaning there are limits to how many flowers it can create. Thankfully, there are other cards that can duplicate tokens, like Anointed Procession and Mondrak, Glory Dominus, and they share a color with Kwia, meaning there could be a deadly Black Lotus-themed mana engine deck further down the line, once Reality Fracture launches on October 2, 2026.
